Find an article

The Reference Staff can assist patrons in obtaining copies of magazine and newspaper articles.  Many periodicals are available in full-text through our Articles [11] databases. 

If you cannot find what you are looking for, please visit the Reference Desk, call (294-7171), or provide the Periodical Article Request Information on our Interlibrary Loan Form [12] to submit a request.  Please provide the article title, the magazine/journal/newspaper title, author, date of publication, and page numbers.

There is a fee of 50 cents for each interlibrary loan request. If you do not pick up your interlibrary loan item you will still need to pay the fee. In rare cases, there also may be a charge from the lending library. This resource, powered by Ancestry.com, delivers billions of records in census data, vital records, directories, photos, and more.  The U.S. collections include federal and U.S. censuses; birth, death, and marriage records including the Social Security Death Index; and U.S. border crossing and trans-ocean ship records.  Other collections include Canadian collections, U.K. collections, other international collections, military collections, and multimedia collections.  This resource can only be accessed from within the library from our public computers.

Antiques Reference [25]  

Use this resource to help determine the value of antiques, collectibles, and fine art. Digital images and pricing information for hundreds of thousands of antiques and collectibles are provided from fifty leading regional auction houses located throughout the United States, plus other selected specialist auctions.

ART Collection [26]  

This resource provides high-quality, digital images of works of art from museums around the world. Cultures and time periods represented range from contemporary art, Native American and Inuit art, to ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian works, along with Japanese and Chinese works.

Dayton Daily News 2010- [38]  

View past issues of the Dayton Daily News online.  Coverage begins with January 1, 2010.  These scanned copies provide access to the complete newspaper.  Select or type in the newspaper title to begin your search.  Earlier editions of the paper can be found on microfilm in the library.

La Enciclopedia Estudiantil Hallazgos is a beginning-level Spanish encyclopedia site, with thousands of articles, illustrations, and maps, and an easy-to-use, bilingual interface.

The Educational Resource Information Center contains more than 2,200 digests along with references for additional information and citations and abstracts from over 1,000 educational and education-related journals.

European Views of the Americas [45] (mobile [17])

This bibliographic database is a valuable index for those interested in European works that relate to the Americas.  The database contains more than 32,000 entries and is a comprehensive guide to printed records about the Americas written in Europe before 1750. It covers the history of European exploration as well as portrayals of Native American peoples. A wide range of subject areas are covered; from natural disasters to disease outbreaks and slavery.

Freegal Music [50] (mobile [51])

Freegal is downloadable music service which provides access to the catalog of artists in Sony Music Entertainment and other labels. Library cardholders can download three songs a week with their barcode and pin number. Freegal works with any MP3 device, including iPods.

Lexi-PALS Drug Guide [63] (mobile [17])

The Lexi-PALS Drug Guide is a database of Patient Advisory Leaflets from Lexi-Comp that provides vital education on medications for patients. Each medication is presented in an easy to follow and understand question-and-answer format. The database consists of over 1,450 medication and natural product leaflets, with an additional 600 Spanish language leaflets representing the most subscribed and commonly used medications. The database is updated monthly.

This world-class bibliographic database provides coverage on subjects such as librarianship, classification, cataloging, bibliometrics, online information retrieval, information management and more. With coverage dating back to the mid-1960s, it is the oldest continuously produced database covering the field of information science.

This database provides digital access to multiple popular literary criticism series, including Nineteenth Century Literature Criticism, Twentieth-Century Literary Criticism, and Contemporary Literary Criticism.  Literature Criticism Online allows easy access to criticism drawn from thousands of sources. It covers authors who lived from 1800 through 2009. Citations are provided for all entries.

Provides authoritative medical information on medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical sciences, and much more. Created by the National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE indexs over 4800 biomedical journals providing citations with some full text. Most materials indexed are at the research level.

MedlinePlus [72] (mobile [73])

MedlinePlus will direct you to information to help answer health questions. MedlinePlus brings together authoritative information from NLM, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other government agencies and health-related organizations. Preformulated MEDLINE searches are included in MedlinePlus and give easy access to medical journal articles. MedlinePlus also has extensive information about drugs, an illustrated medical encyclopedia, interactive patient tutorials, and latest health news.

Middle Search Plus [74] (mobile [17])

Offers full text for popular magazines for middle and junior high school research. Also includes biographies, primary source documents, and an Image Collection.

Morningstar Investment Research Center [75] [In Library Use Only]  

This resource is only available from library computers. With Morningstar IRC you can research more than 23,000 stocks and mutual funds; build and analyze an investment portfolio; and learn about stocks, mutual funds, and portfolios.

Improve your health online. This non-profit consumer health Web site provides high quality health information created and evaluated by medical and health professional faculty from several Ohio universities.

Newsbank [77]  

The electronic editions of record for major Ohio newspapers (the Dayton Daily News [78], the Columbus Dispatch, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, and the Toledo Blade)--all in one easy-to-search database. Each paper provides unique coverage of local and regional news, including companies, politics, sports, industries, cultural activities, and people in the community. Paid ads are excluded.

Provides selected full text for nearly 30 national (U.S.) and international newspapers. The database also contains full text television & radio news transcripts, and selected full text for more than 200 regional (U.S.) newspapers.

NoveList [80] (mobile [17])

A resource for readers of fiction that provides subject heading access, reviews, annotations, and much more for over 135,000 fiction titles. It also includes Author Read-alikes, What We're Reading, Book Discussion Guides, BookTalks, and Annotated Book Lists. For school media specialists and teachers there are Picture Book Extenders and articles on Teaching with Fiction.

This resource features a student-focused interface and a database of young adult, children's and easy titles designed for children in pre-K, elementary or middle schools.

Novels and Short Stories for Students [82] (mobile [28])

Novels for Students contains easily accessible and content-rich discussions of the literary and historical background of works from various cultures and time periods.  Short Stories for Students contains concise synopses of the story's plot, characters and themes, along with a brief author biography, a discussion of the story's cultural and historical significance and excerpted criticism geared specifically towards the high school student.  (From the Gale Virtual Reference Library)

Ohio Battle Flags: Fight for the Colors [83]  

Ohio soldiers carried the flags, known as colors, in the Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I and World War II. There are 552 battle flags in the Adjutant General's battleflag collection, including 434 from the Civil War. This resource provides information, as well as digital images, of the actual flags.

Ohio Death Certificate Index [84]  

Search this database for death certificates from 1913-1944 and discover other ways to locate death certificates.

Ohio Government Information and Services [85]  

The official State of Ohio government site is full of resources for citizens and businesses.

Ohio History Central Encyclopedia [86]  

An evolving, dynamic online encyclopedia that includes information about Ohio's natural history, prehistory and history. Each section contains written information, maps, timelines, and images.

Ohio History Online [87]  

The Web site of the Ohio Historical Society filled with numerous resources from prehistory to modern history in Ohio. Various collections are available online and information on more resources is available.

Ohio Memory [88]  

A digital collection of Ohio historical artifacts.

Ohio Military Rosters [89]  

Search the full text of the roster from the Adjutant General records for officers and enlisted men from Ohio who served in the War of 1812.

Ohio Newspaper Index [90]  

This resource is an index of Ohio newspapers held by the Ohio Historical Society (over 4500 titles). These include historical newspapers reaching back as far as 1793. Ways of obtaining copies of the newspapers are also covered here.

Ohioline [91] (OSU Extension Office)

Through factsheets, bulletins and other educational materials, the Ohio State University Extension Office provides a wealth of information covering a wide array of subjects, such as agriculture, natural resources, family and consumer sciences, community development, 4-H and youth.

Opposing Viewpoints in Context [92]  

Covering today’s hottest social issues Opposing Viewpoints in Context helps students research, analyze and organize a broad variety of data for conducting research, completing writing assignments, preparing for debates, creating presentations, and more.  This database includes pro/con essays, topic overviews, primary source documents, biographies, court-case overviews, statistical tables, charts and graphs, images, and podcasts.

Oxford Reference Online [93]  

This resource makes a wide variety of reference books available online, including English and bilingual dictionaries, maps and atlases, timelines, an encyclopedia, and subject references from Oxford University Press.

Primary Search provides full text for nearly 70, popular magazines for elementary school research. All full text articles included in the database are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles).

Professional Development Collection [95] (mobile [17])

Designed for professional educators, this database provides a highly specialized collection of nearly 550 high quality education journals, including more than 350 peer-reviewed titles. This database also contains more than 200 educational reports.

Psychology and Behavorial Sciences Collection [96] (mobile [17])

This database covers topics such as emotional and behavioral characteristics, psychiatry & psychology, mental processes, anthropology, and observational and experimental methods.

Readers' Guide Retrospective: 1890-1982 [97] (mobile [17])

Sometimes older magazine articles are difficult to track down. This database indexes the most popular general-interest periodicals published in the United States from the year 1890 through 1982. It is a tremendous historical record. This is not a full-text database; however, the Reference Staff can use an article citation to obtain a copy of the article from other resources.

ReferenceUSA [98]  

This directory is not only good for simple phone or address look up, but for marketing research. It contains detailed information on more than 13 million U.S. businesses and 120 million U.S. households. The information includes addresses, phone numbers, toll free numbers, Web site URLs, financial information, median household income, median home value, and more.

Regional Business News [99] (mobile [17])

Provides coverage of 75 business journals, newspapers and newswires from all metropolitan and rural areas within the United States.

Religion and Philosophy Collection [100] (mobile [17])

This database provides extensive coverage of such topics as world religions, major denominations, biblical studies, religious history, epistemology, political philosophy, philosophy of language, moral philosophy and the history of philosophy.

Salem Health - [From Home] [101]   [In the Library] [102]  

This is the online version of Magill's Medical Guide. The Guide covers diseases, disorders, treatments, procedures, specialties, anatomy, biology, and issues in an A-Z format, with sidebars addressing recent developments in medicine and concise information boxes for all diseases and disorders. Every entry has been evaluated by a panel of medical consultants and then updated by experts or re-edited to ensure currency and accuracy.

Salem History - [From Home] [103]   [In the Library] [104]  

This is the online version of Salem Press' "Great Lives from History:  Inventors and Inventions," which features 409 essays covering 413 individual inventors (including 27 women) from all time, worldwide.  Included are those inventors recognized for shaping modern technology and the way we live today. The inventions included are not only mechanical and other physical devices but also processes, software, and systems such as those applied to business management.

Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps [105]  

The Sanborn Maps are large scale street plans produced by the Sanborn Fire Insurance company from 1867 to 1970. Sanborn Maps show the outline of each building including the location of windows and doors together with street names, street and sidewalk widths, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. Use these maps to locate and identify buildings and neighborhoods, to study the growth of towns and cities, and to study the impact of new developments.

Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps [105]  

The Sanborn Maps are large scale street plans produced by the Sanborn Fire Insurance company from 1867 to 1970. Sanborn Maps show the outline of each building including the location of windows and doors together with street names, street and sidewalk widths, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. Mango Languages [178] has an app, which you can install when you access Mango on a mobile device through the Library's Web site.  Installation requires you to register.  If you are already a registered user, simply sign in.  Otherwise you will need to check your email for an account activation link.

The MedlinePlus [179] mobile Web site is m.medlineplus.gov [180].

Some of the various World Book [181] tools provide a mobile version that can be selected once you have accessed them.  Look for the link at the top of the welcome page.

Mobile versions or apps have been announced, but not introduced, by ProQuest (CultureGrams, Dayton Daily News 2010-, HeritageQuest).

Interlibrary Loan

If Wright Library does not own an item you want, you can request a copy from another library.  Visit or call (294-7171) the Reference or Audiovisual Information desks and we will take your request or you can use our ILL Request Form [182] to email us your request. 

There is a fee of 50 cents for each interlibrary loan request. If you do not pick up your interlibrary loan item you will still need to pay the fee. In rare cases, there also may be a charge from the lending library. If this happens, the library staff will contact you before placing the request.

Suggest a Purchase

The Library welcomes patron suggestions for materials to be purchased for the collection.  To suggest an item to be purchased, visit or call (294-7171) the Reference Desk for books and the Audiovisual Department for audiobooks, CD-ROMs, DVDs, and music CDs.
